October 11, 2008 Binghamton Barbarians Less, Cortland Thundering Herd More Barbarian Scoring
Erik Kelly (2 or 3 tries)
Barb O' The Match: ERIK KELLY, Center (with Honorable Mention going to Gilbert...great game, dude!)
What Went Right:
The pack at set scrums. Great job winning Barb put-ins and stole at least one against the head. The backline on attack, running in its usual assortment of mouth-watering tries. Team fortitude. Several tries down in the first half might’ve finished Barbarian interest in a match in years past, but this team came out blistering in the second half and brought the score close. Great perseverance!
What Went Wrong:
The pack at lineouts. Oy. Didn’t compete on Cortland’s throws and lifters forgot how to launch the jumper. Cortland’s pack spread the field better than the Barbs’, gaining an advantage in loose play that the Herd put to good use. The Back Three and kick coverage. Something to be worked on for the future. Frustrating penalties. They cost the Barbs a touched-down try and who knows how many opportunities. Could have been the match. English Comprehension 101. When the ref rates the game PG before kickoff, restraint should be made by all concerned regarding their use of colorful metaphors. More costly goddam penalties…
Bottom Line:
When the Barbs played the Barbs’ game, the Barbs did well. When Cortland was able to impose its will, the Barbs did not play well. This was the usual teeth-rattling collision that is a Barb-Herd match. They don’t call themselves the “Thundering” Herd for nothing. Considering several Barbs were playing with lingering injuries and there were some key players out with injuries, the team did well on the road. Bummer about Palmer's denied try, but those are the breaks. It was a gorgeous day and a more or less clean game, so good job to the Barbs on a very successful season, and congratulations to the Herd on a great game and a great season of its own!
